In a farmhouse somewhere by the sea, a seemingly innocent visit from an old friend escalates into a desperate battle. Harold Pinter masterfully weaves menace and mystery throughout this hypnotic piece.. Deeley joins Anna in a contest of memory, singing off-key snatches of the songs of the forties, Kate smiles at them silently: strangers trying to wrench a common ground of cliche from disparate pasts. The battleground is Kate: which of the two, Deeley or Anna, has possessed more of her? Their weapons, as in most Pinter, are sex and language. The winner is the one who can impose their version of the past.
In love, there is always one who eats and one who is eaten…
