Charles McFarland Steps Down as Third Wall Theatre Artistic Associate

The board of directors of Third Wall Theatre today announced that they had accepted the resignation of Artistic Associate Charles McFarland. After two successful seasons as joint artistic leader with founder James Richardson, Mr. McFarland decided it was time focus his energy on other endeavours.

In his work for the City of Ottawa Theatres Division, Mr. McFarland oversees programming and operations at both Centrepointe and the new Shenkman Arts Centre and has been volunteering his time as Artistic Associate for Third Wall over the past two seasons. “I have enormous admiration for James and Third Wall Theatre and the artistic vision and achievements which have placed the company at the forefront of Ottawa theatre, but I have decided that other commitments need more of my attention” said McFarland. Charles has devoted many seasons to Third Wall even before becoming a co-Artistic Associate in 2008. He has been a mentor, board member and one of the most successful guest directors the company has worked with. Some of his productions including The Real Inspector Hound, Doctor Faustus, Henry V & As You Like It are among the top selling shows in Third Wall’s history. Board chair George Stonyk said on behalf of the entire company “…it was with surprise and sadness that we received Charles’ resignation; however we understand his need to refocus his energies. His work has been an inspiration for the whole company, both on stage and off.”

Founder and co-Artistic Associate James Richardson said: “Charles has been an incredible mentor and partner to me. Third Wall really needed a push to keep going and he has helped us immensely in beginning to stabilize the organization. I am proud of our work together as artistic partners.” Richardson also noted that this was not an acrimonious departure and that the past two years have shown that “…two heads are better than one! I look forward to having him work with us as a ‘guest’ in the future.”

Effective immediately, Richardson will resume the title of Artistic Director and will, on an interim basis, continue as administrative head. George Stonyk said “Part of our reason for creating the joint leadership model with James & Charles was to make the transition from a one person staff to one with both an administrative and artistic head.” With the road ahead for Third Wall the board decided that it should “…allow James to focus on what he does best – artistic leadership.” They will begin the search for both the right candidate and the appropriate funds for the position of General Manager, with the intention to have the new position filled by late autumn. Meanwhile James will be busy preparing what will be Third Wall’s 10th anniversary season, to be announced in early May.

For more information on this story, Third Wall in general or on how you can help them prosper please contact James Richardson at james@thirdwall.com or 613 236 1425. Third Wall Theatre is a not-for-profit registered charity.

Welcome to Third Wall Theatre’s new website and to our new season.

You are a part of history! What has been in the works for over three years has finally been realized: a shared dream, a company made stronger and more vital to Ottawa audiences by the passion and creativity of two. This season is Third Wall’s first season jointly programmed by its two Artistic Associates in a new leadership model.

However in a season full of firsts – our first as co-artistic associates, our first year of a Shakespeare Ensemble of twenty-five Ottawa actors working in weekly verse workshops, our first full season as Associate Theatre Company here at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre (this production of Look Back in Anger and Peer Gynt in March 2009) and our first production on the Mainstage (Henry V, May 2009) – it is comforting to have some familiar faces in our first production. We are thrilled to welcome back to its helm the Rideau award-winning director of Greek: Kevin Orr. He has assembled a cast of stellar Ottawa actors including Kristina Watt -a Rideau award winner herself for Top Girls, Richard Gelinas, Stewart Matthews, Amanda Kellock (all familiar to Third Wall audiences) and newcomer Paul Mackan.

Our reinvigorated mandate is to engage in the present through the classics. We hope you will agree as you journey through the coming year that you are about to experience a new approach to our work but that continues our desire to never allow the classics to become museum pieces.

We invite you to engage with us by sending comments to our site. We love lively discussion and debate.

Together, we wish you – this season and beyond –a Good Night Out!

James Richardson & Charles McFarland
