To celebrate her promotion to upper management, an ambitious businesswoman summons a group of "Top Girls" — some of the most compelling women from history and legend — to a banquet. The story of her life, and theirs, gives a painful reckoning of the choices, concessions and compromises that women in particular must make to get ahead in the world.
This production coincides with the 25th anniversary of this most famous and celebrated of Churchill's plays. The concept of "living to work", rather than "working to live", is the trademark of our day and age. Even more than in 1982, humans — especially women — are caught in a conflict between competition and caring. Churchill is the most important female playwright of the British stage. Top Girls, considered to be her defining work, weaving fantasy and reality, is both delightful comedy, as well as a scorching political examination of the role of women in contemporary society.
