ITS BEEN A WHILE! But We Are Still Here!

It has been a few months since we have been in touch but we wanted to let you know we are still out there and an active part of the Ottawa theatre community. Remarkably, this summer marked Third Wall’s 15th season.  We have produced a show every year since our inception and in total have created 35 productions in that time. Only three professional companies in Ottawa have produced more and all have been around considerably longer.  This is possible only because of donors and patrons like you.

I was honoured to have been asked by Odyssey Theatre to be their interim General Manager until this Fall, seeing them through one of the busiest and most successful of their seasons. This has meant some reduction in Third Wall activity but we have not been quiet. In 2016-17 we had a very successful 3-night run of An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein at Arts Court in April. This revisiting of our award winning 2003 hit comedy saw me reunite with long-time collaborator Graham Price to co-direct the production. With company member Andrew Moore along with four others including TWA member Katarina Fiallos we were able to bring this play back to life and provide a rollicking good night out for many Ottawa audiences.

We also co-hosted Culture Intersection in September, a workshop presented by Odyssey Theatre for Ottawa artists to connect and learn from the Indigenous community.  Other community involvement has included playing an active role in the redevelopment project of our home base -  Arts Court.

Our partnership with 100 Watt Productions that created a company for young Ottawa artists has entered its 6th season.  We celebrated the close of its 5th year with a sold-out production of Caryl Churchill’s Love And Information (written by Top Girls playwright Caryl Churchill) at the Ottawa Fringe Festival. The courageous and polished work that the TWA ensemble offers audiences has now earned a reputation for breaking wide open the belief of what young artists are capable of.  This year the unique Third Wall/100 Watt partnership continues with 11 Ottawa teenagers under the guidance of TWA Artistic Director Kristina Watt. They are now gearing up for our 6th TWA production taking place in June. Stay tuned: we will toast a creative New Year with an announcement of the play.

There is more upcoming for Third Wall.  We are working on a brand new production for 2018 which will be led by the award-wining creative duo of myself and Graham Price. Due to funding timelines and venue availability we are working towards the fall.  We have had great success fundraising since 2014 (reducing our deficit by almost $100,000) thanks in large part to you. However, our current deficit of $40,000 is still too high to qualify us for arts funding. So we rely solely on ticket sales and donations to continue beyond our 15th season of creating a Good Night Out. Any contribution helps and as the saying goes – many hands make light work – this is especially true for theatre which is inconceivable without many hands. As an additional thank you for your donation of $100 or more we will invite you to a special sneak peak presentation of the new production.

Once again thank you for your continued support and we look forward to creating more and more theatre and being a leader in the Ottawa Theatre, enriching and engaging the Ottawa community in the coming 15 years.  I would like to wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Holiday and I look forward to more interaction in the new year.
